Intro to Astro Photography

Intro to Astro Photography

Saturday 08 June
Lake Hume - 6pm - 2 Hours
Andrew Osborne
Do you gaze up at the night sky with wonder? What about looking up at the stars and thinking, how old that light you are seeing is? Maybe you watch as day and night morph into one, and the stars come out to play.

This meetup is going to cover off everything you need to know to start capturing amazing single shot astrophotography and a few extra bits of helpful advice. The learnt basics of capturing a single frame will form the building blocks of your astrophotography journey. Think of this meetup as your first step on that journey or for those who have already started, maybe a road sign.

Astrophotography looks amazing and packs a real punch, however, you do not need to spend a fortune to partake. Does gear make a difference, the simple answer is yes, but it is not the deciding factor when it comes to astrophotography. This meetup will look at planning your session, camera settings, required equipment. I want this meetup to help you maximise your current gear as your start capturing milky way shots.

I felt the balance of theory and then putting it into practice was great. Doi g a refresher on the basics was good and I felt it was pitched at a good level.

The spectacular cloud formations, along with the final colours from the sunset created some beautiful photo opportunities. Just a little post editing to bring in a little more light to the foreground.

Title or Location: Craig?s Hut Mt Stirling in Victoria Australia
Craig?s Hut is an Australian icon as it was built in the early 1980s for the movie set A Man From Snowy River, however it was never anywhere near the Snowy River country. Photographers in Victoria make this a bucket list location to go to and photograph and when I had the opportunity to go for a houseboat holiday and it was not that far from Craig?s Hut I ask my wife if she would like to stay near Mt Stirling and come with me for a sunrise photo shoot. So at 3:30am we set off on a one hour 40

Title or Location: Sunset over Lake Moulamein, NSW, Australia.
Having just arrived to camp for the night, I was unprepared with my camera when we wandered over to the lake. I managed to capture this shot on my phone (Samsung 10), just as the sunset was at its best, and the water hens swam into view.

As anyone who chases milkyway photos will tell you, they take some careful planning and often a lack of sleep. Charlies Hut is in the Scenic Rim. It's about a 2hr drive from home, and with the help of Photopills, we could see that the moon would have set with the milkyway still visible at about 4am. So alarms were set for 1.30am, coffee was made and off we went. I use the intervalometer on my Canon 6D mark ii to shoot between 15-20 images of the sky. The lens I used was a Samyang 14mm, set

Title or Location: Just north of Brechin on Hwy 169.
May 10 the northern lights hit a G5 storm, a KP index of 9, the highest it will go, and the best storm we've seen in over 20 years. I drove my 10 year old son north to see them, this was a chance of a lifetime. I managed to get several amazing photos. Canon R6M2, RF10-20mm lens at 10mm, 30sec at f4, iso 1000, manual focusing. This was looking more north-west as most of the bright colours could be seen to the south, west and just north of us.

Cremorne Point is always a favourite choice to capture the southerly sunsets with the Sydney Opera House and the city skyline in the frame. This isn't a long exposure shot but a motion blur added to the water in post production.

Title or Location: Stub Stewart State Park Hilltop area
This was the day of famous Northern Lights visible in most of the North America. Stubs Stewart is the most ideal dark area for star gazing so I reached there around 11pm. As expected, it was full of enthusiasts. The lights were predicted to be at peak between 10pm - 2am. Around 2pm, when we though the "show was over", the lights started getting incredibly bright, and that is when this picture was taken. Interestingly, the lights were bright in some regions and other regions were faded enough to
